The Tree of Joy is a Christmas tree for less fortunate children in Paarl and surrounding areas. The décor of the Christmas tree is made up of name tags, listed on the name tag is the child's name, gender, age, the child's Christmas Wish and the name of the institution / organization that represents the child.
The public choose a name from the tree, buy the gift, wrap it, attach the name tag to the gift and drop it into the collection box situated next to the Tree of Joy. In 2006 Paarl Mall and the Rotary Club of Drakenstein joined hands to make a child's Christmas wish come true. The Paarl Mall shoppers and tenants support has been overwhelming and the list of names grew as the public opened their hearts to the less fortunate.
In November 2006, various institutions supplied the names of 150 children, and on the 22nd of December, the Drakenstein Rotary Club collected and delivered 150 Christmas gifts to the various organizations which ensured that the children received it on Christmas Eve. In 2007, the number of institutions grew and so did the number of less fortunate children, We had 250 name tags on the Tree of Joy and on 23 December 2007, 250 gifts were delivered by the Rotary Club of Drakenstein to the various Organisations.
In 2008, the list of names doubled and the public's support did not waver! On 23 December, 500 gifts were delivered to the various Institutions and Organisations for the less fortunate.
